Injury Prevention

The standard sports therapy approach is solving pain & injuries in a reactive manner. On the other hand, injury prevention is a proactive approach, taking care of your body NOW to maximise your results and prevent future issues.

Injury Prevention / Prehabilitation (Prehab)

Prehab is all about learning knowledge that applies to your body and using it to optimise the way you experience life. Using the knowledge of how certain injuries occur via mechanisms, paired with specific knowledge of your sport/activity - Certain preventative measures can be applied to massively reduce the chance of injuries within your sporting season.

Why wait until you're injured? There are steps you can take now to decrease the risk of injury!

The goal of prehab is to reduce your risk for injury while improving your overall physical health.

Education

Following the start of a Injury Prevention block/program, certain facts need to be established to give a clear target to aim towards.

Each sport/activity requires different biomechanics and physical demands on the body which in turn can put you more at risk of specific injuries more than others e.g.

  • Baseball players are at risk of shoulder impingement and SLAP lesions due to overhead pitching
  • Basketball players are at risk of ankles sprains and jumpers knee due to repetitive changing direction and jumping.

Assessments

Assessments will be utilised to assess current injuries/problematic areas of concern as well as specific mobility and strength testing to give us the best understanding of where to target work.

You could be more at risk of an injury due to specific predisposing factors, e.g.

  • Runners with flat feet (pes planus) are at a higher risk of achilles tendinopathy or plantar fasciitis

With this known, postural assessments can also be utilised to see how you stand, sit, walk etc to help identify predisposing factors.

Mobility/Recovery Work

After areas of concern have been identified, specific mobility or recovery work can be applied. Techniques used will be:

  1. Maitlands Mobilisations
  2. Variety of Stretching Techniques
  3. Sports Massage

This can be utilised to help you recover quicker during the training period leading towards your competitive season as well as increase your mobility which is essential in decreasing injury chance.

Prehabilitation Exercises/ Drills

Finally, combining the knowledge of what injuries you are most at risk by + your specific needs such as an area of weakness or reduced mobility - Exercises can be given and coached through to prime your body for your chosen sport.

These exercises can be progressed and changed to properly prepare your body for the challenge ahead!
